Check out Google’s top ten search phrases for the year 2006:

  1. bebo
  2. myspace
  3. world cup
  4. metacafe
  5. radioblog
  6. wikipedia
  7. video
  8. rebelde
  9. mininova
  10. wiki

What’s the common thread here? For starters, “bebo”, “myspace”, “metacafe”, “radioblog”, “wikipedia”, “mininova”, and “wiki” are all apart of the new generation of internet services, or what O’Reilly Media phrases as “Web 2.0“. Each of the above websites is known for effectively sharing and communicating information between users. Web 2.0 is all about becoming “social” online. It’s a collaboration of distributing just about anything you can think of …videos, music, articles, journals, critiques, advice, podcasts, blogs, and reviews to name just a few.

The above list is what Google calls their “Zeitgeist“; the list is compiled of searches that were unique to 2006 and received more traffic when compared to years previous. Basically, it shows us what you and I were infatuated with and more importantly, where the World Wide Web is heading.

Bill Marriot, Chief Executive of Marriott International states, “A year ago, I didn’t even know what a blog was — until my communications team began telling me about all the blog traffic on travel and tourism. Now I know this is where the action is if you want to talk to your customers directly — and hear back from them.”
