Just as the Internet and the lodging industries have matured and evolved over the last 10 years, so have photography and what guests expect in order to be sold an “experience”.  Great website design today is becoming increasingly visual; often, photography is the springboard for a compelling site.  Several years ago, potential guests found it acceptable to be shown a sampling of rooms in single, wide angle images.  Today, they expect to see all rooms or room types, including multiple angles and details.  The MTV-reared Gen-Xers are now moneyed and looking for escapes and travel experiences… and the language they speak is one of images.

Beyond Description
A potential guest now expects photos to go far beyond a simple descriptive photo of a guestroom or space.  Whether they realize it or not, they are looking to be sold an “experience” in a visual montage and/or images which conjure up mood and emotion.  This is especially key for the high-end luxury travel market.  This type of investment in great images translates into increased occupancy, higher room rates, and a tangible effect on your bottom line.

Styling and Staging
In concert with images which are rich with emotion and mood, styling is essential.  Styling is editing and staging a space or guest room so that it “puts its best foot forward” and supports unique selling propositions.  Much of styling is removing or re-arranging rather than adding.  Often, the photographer or property owner is left with the work of styling.  Styling for photographs is an art and a professional is a good investment.  Jumping Rocks includes a stylist (separate from the photographer) as part of their package.

About Jumping Rocks
Jumping Rocks’ partners and former innkeepers, Matthew Lovette and Mark Smith, know what sells rooms, having purchased a struggling inn and orchestrated it’s dramatic turnaround.  That success began with a click of the camera.  As hospitality photographers, they are known for imbuing their images with mood and feeling, yielding evocative and compelling photographs — Pictures that Work.
