Yesterday, eHotelier.com included two valuable articles about internet access for guests in their daily Global Hospitality e-mail newsletter.

The first article, “Hotel guests revolting over wi-fi“, discusses the growing dissatisfaction among hotel guests over having to pay for high-speed internet access. A silicon.com poll sited in the article indicates that, among other things, “more than half of respondents believe hotels must stop charging paying guests altogether for internet access, branding it “a rip-off”, and a staggering 98 per cent of respondents said charges are too high.”

The second article, “The Hotel Internet Access Nightmare“, focuses on unreliable high-speed internet access. While high-speed internet access is a nice amenity to offer leisure guests, most businsess travelers rely upon this service. If offered, it must be reliably available.

Do your guests expect and rely upon high-speed internet access during their stays? More and more travelers are looking for such access, including leisure travelers. The articles listed above remind us of this importance.

Is it time to reevaluate high-speed internet access for your guests?

I am amazed at the number of high quality hotels who target business travelers and conference business who expect you to pay extra for internet service. Sometimes the fees are outrageous - $10 per day at the last conference I went to and it was an internet conference! Your alternative to paying for this was to use the terrible free computers in thelobby that automatically shut down evey 45 minutes or so and made you sign back in. Enough people complained to the conference organizers about it that I doubt they will schedule another conference in a place without free and relaible internet access for their attendees

The cost to supply FREE Internet at hotels is staggering. Resorts must pay for the Internet connection, wireless equipment, security, management and train staff to educate guests to use the service. It’s not like giving away HBO. Providing a quality Internet service to guests is costing the hospitatality industry and those costs must be passed on to guests. Everybody wants it for free but honestly, you get what you pay for. Hotels that do it on the cheap are providing a dis-service to their guests. Hotels that buck up and pay for a quality system must charge and make money to keep the service up and running strong. I find many hotels that offer free service a hackers heavan attracting spammers and hackers to do their dirty work. I’ve seen hotels get IP’s blacklisted due to spammers holing up conducting dirty work and leaving the hotel holding the bag. It’s worth paying for service knowing that you’ll be on a secure network with newest technology. Hotels that offer free service are ultimately going to start charging as they are having to upgrade older equipment and need to protect, secure and provide tech support on their networks. Hotels are a for profit venture and adding pay for Internet services are a great way to boost revenues and let the technical companies that install the systems deal with the headaches.
