The Importance of Site Design – An Analogy

Understanding the value of the internet is at times daunting. As a still fairly new medium, and one that is in constant change, keeping an accurate perspective on the value of your marketing dollars can be difficult. Sometimes analogies help. Consider the following hypothetical situation:
Next month, an annual festival is coming to your town and you KNOW that 3,000 people looking for lodging will pass right in front of your property. How do you respond? Common sense would dictate that you paint the front door, mow the lawn, fix up your sign, sweep the sidewalk, and possibly even hire a landscaping company. 3,000 people is a lot of potential business and of course you need to make a great impression. To not do so would be foolish… right?
Now a website is much like a sign or landscaping or chipping paint. Good or bad, it is a representation of your property. Often, your website will be the very first impression you make with a potential guest and most sites receive thousands and even tens of thousands of visitors EVERY single month! That means a lot of first impressions are being made with living, breathing people. Yet it’s astounding how many managers, innkeepers and owners will settle for mediocre or even bad websites with poor navigation, limited content, unattractive color scheme, and even photos taken with a camera phone! This only hurts a business. Extensive internet marketing that drives thousands of visitors to a bad site is like trying to drive with one foot on the gas and the other foot pumping the break.
Time and again, we see our clients’ bookings soar when a new site goes live. We know what works and will direct you to it. If we have taken the time to do a design review for your site, it means that we think it could be better or MUCH better. Check out our design portfolio for ideas, or consider some of the examples on this page. Compare these designs to your own. Where would YOU want to stay?

Your website is your online storefront and you’ll get out of it what you put in to it. Here’s an interesting take on free websites that will make you chuckle http://business.mainetoday.com/smallbusiness/internetmarketing/006639.html

Having been in the design department and now in promotion, I can see how important BOTH aspects are to a successful web site. Good promo to a poorly designed web site is pointless, as is a great design with no promotion. It is worth the extra expense to utilize the expertise of both departments!
