The Future of The Internet

Why Do You Care? Net Neutrality Effects YOU!
The Internet today is equal in that both corporations and the “little people” all have equal opportunity for their websites to be found effectively on the Internet. According to Wikipedia, 1 million signatures were handed over to Congress to support Net Neutrality in 2006.
Some phone and cable companies want to make a profit by having a faster connection for their “sponsors.” They want to determine which websites load quickly, which load slowly, and which do not load at all (according to www.SaveTheInternet.com). Their sponsors will have to pay a hefty fee, which will eliminate the ability of smaller businesses and individual owners of websites to participate in the “faster Internet.” This will catapult the already successful big businesses on the Internet. These big businesses currently dominate when it comes to Internet Marketing because of the funding they are able to allocate.
WITHOUT NET NEUTRALITY – A FEW NEGATIVES:
1. Censorship – the network will decide what is available to consumers.
2. Smaller start up businesses will not stand much of a chance in becoming the next Ebay or Google because of the huge obstacles in their way.
3. Costs of sharing your voice, pictures, videos, and so forth will go up. This will limit freedom of speech because many will not be able to afford it or want to pay for it.
According to www.SaveTheInternet.com, “either we make rules that ensure an even playing field for everyone, or we have rules that hold the Internet captive to the whims of a few big companies. The Internet has thrived because revolutionary ideas like blogs, Wikipedia or Google could start on a shoestring and attract huge audiences. Without Net Neutrality, the pipeline owners will choose the winners and losers on the Web.”
