To most, the gibberish words "v7ndotcom elursrebmem" in the title mean nothing at all. Some may wonder what happened to the writer, and others may run for the closest computer dictionary to look up the meaning. To those in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) world, the words are reminders of a contest to see who can get their web page to the #1 position on May 15th, 2006 in the free results in Google for the term "v7ndotcom elursrebmem". This may sound like a practice in futility, a waste of time, or perhaps just a whim for a bunch people with too much time on their hands.

For watching-paint-dry.com, this contest offers a chance to help people all over the world live normal lives. The owner of the site, who wishes to remain anonymous, is spending many hours working on his computer and a web page on it in the hopes of sending the $7,000 grand prize to the Center for Celiac Research.

Blizzard will track the progress of this page for use as a case study. The page will employ only white hat strategies (those condoned by search engines), unlike some other participants in the SEO contest. This means we have a great opportunity to study the link building strategies, site optimization, and advertising that helps a site and its individual pages. We will be watching the page and giving advice to the owner in the hopes that we can not only learn from the experience, but also to help give kids, like watching-paint-dry.com’s owners two sons, and adults all over the globe a chance at a normal life.

In the coming months, watch for articles on this blog detailing how the page is progressing in the standings. We will monitor the page in all top three search engines - Google, Yahoo, and MSN to see how it performs. It is important to note the progress so far. In Google, the page is currently listed fifth after being listed first yesterdat. This is still a respectable standing, considering 233,000 pages have been indexed so far. In Yahoo, the page is also fifth with one of Blizzard Blogs, SEO For Blogs, fluctuating between first and second despite not being active in the contest. MSN does not show the page in the top 50 results, but the top level domain watching-paint-dry.com is ranked 14th.

This newsletter will only be keeping up with the site on a once a month basis. For more frequent updates, please visit the v7ndotcom elursrebmem tracking blog. This is where we will be keeping an eye on the site and noting the progress and strategies used to later compile into a case study here.
