Online advertising has taken the driver’s seat in marketing budgets as the use of the internet to promote a business had become more important. In 2005, online advertisers spent $12.5 billion dollars. Last year, that spend increased to $16.8 billion. That accounts for a 34% increase, a trend which has been evident over the past 3 years. The changes in spending have been compared to television, which is completely appropriate as the role of video on the internet is also on the incline.

A recent study at eMarketer.com shows that these trends are expected to continue. Their estimates for the future predict that even in a slowing economy, online traffic will increase and there will be a need to match those growing audiences with online advertising replacing traditional ads. There will also be stronger targeting and tracking of advertising online that will justify the spending. Formats such as online video advertising are expected to see increased usage which will encourage more marketers to devote budgets to the medium.
