Recently, Orbitz.com, a leading online travel agent, released their “Top 5 Destinations” report to showcase Orbitz’s five years in business. Top destinations from the last five years were given, along with their picks for the trendiest places to visit over the next five years.
Some locations were international, including Shanghai, China; Reykjavik, Iceland, and Cape Town, South Africa. Most surprising were the domestic destinations of Albuquerque, New Mexico and New Orleans, Louisiana.
With the recent devastation of Hurricane Katrina, we were surprised to see New Orleans on the list, but the recent reconstruction efforts are earning the Big Easy kudos in the travel industry. One by one, New Orleans bed and breakfasts, hotels, and resorts are opening to take in more tourists. Restaurants and other business owners are welcoming back customers and working to get the word out that New Orleans was down, but not out. Special rates and deals are being offered all over town, from Bourbon Street to the French Quarter.

With nearly 30,000 rooms available across New Orleans, choices for staying and playing abound. Events are happening almost weekly through the end of the year, so you are sure to find some spectacular entertainment while you’re here. Some lodging properties are offering fabulous specials in an attempt to draw tourism back to the Big Easy. Avenue Inn Bed and Breakfast near the French Quarter, for example, is offering a “NO Hurricane Guarantee.” This offer includes the guarantee that if there is even the threat of a hurricane for the New Orleans area, they will allow guests to cancel reservations without penalty, then return at a later date for the same discount, or use your credit at prevailing rates and stay one extra free night on them. These types of deals makes planning a vacation relatively worry free. Some bed and breakfast rates start at $79 per night.
Bringing the tourism dollar back to New Orleans is essential in helping the city rebuild. Research done by Colorado State University reveals that it is statistically unlikely that there will be a repeat of the devastation seen during the 2005 hurricane season over the next few years. Taking advantage of the abundance of great deals is the best way to see New Orleans on a budget, worry free.
