We finally stopped using KD a few months ago. Their data just seemed off. If I recall correctly the “searches” column conveys “actual searches from a number of databases,” or something to that effect.
We would research customer keywords, and KD would show 44 searches, when Google’s Keyword Tool would show 3,000.
No tool is perfect, though.

While there is value in using keyword research tools, there is also lots of value in finding places where people will express their interests in other ways too (ie. forums, blogs, etc).
These places can be a goldmine of keywords to the astute marketer.
