I receive multiple newsletters in my Inbox everyday, and thought I may put together a post about some of the great statistics and information I have come across in the past few weeks. It is both encouraging and interesting information.

TravelCLICK reported in December that consumers continue an upward trend of shopping for hotels online and booking electronically in the third quarter of 2006. The data shows the Internet contributed 40.0 percent, or 8,581,936 reservations, of the total Central Reservation Office (CRO) reservations at major hotel brands, a 24.8 percent increase compared to the same period in 2005.

Global Distribution System or GDS e-commerce contributed 34.7 percent or 7,419,408 bookings. In the third quarter, brand websites also gained a large share compared to third-party merchant and “rate-shopping” websites. Brand websites were the source of 81.2 percent of the brand’s centrally booked Internet reservations.

Worldwide electronic hotel revenue from the Global Distribution System (GDS) and key Internet sites increased 14.7 percent in 2006 over the third quarter of 2005. The number of electronic room nights booked for the third quarter increased 5.2 percent over the same time last year, while the Average Daily Rate (ADR) increased by 9.1 percent. The average length of stay for the third quarter 2006 was 2.15 nights, nearly the same as last year.

In November of 2006, the Internet reached a new milestone. There were 100 million websites to view in comparison to the 18,000 that were present in 1995.

Web usage is up also. Internet World Stats reports that internet usage has grown to 1,093,529,692 users. Of that total, 35 percent of users originated in Asia.

Google continues to dominate the search world with over 50 percent of searches conducted online. This comes as no surprise to most.

Internet usage is up, technology is in our veins, and e-commerce is where it’s at. Everyone is getting set up online, people are using the internet and not just for information. Use the internet for selling your rooms, don’t worry about old advertising methods. Online marketing will move you ahead of the rest!
