How To Cash in on Misspellings

Skaneateles. Natchitoches. Waxahachie. It’s no wonder these and many other location names are often misspelled by online searchers looking at travel destinations. At one time, webmasters placed misspelled terms in the long string of meta keywords in the source code of websites. Another trick employed to try to rank for these terms was to actually place misspelled words within the website’s text.
These old-school techniques are no longer recommended. Why? Because visitors to your travel and toursim page - both humans and search engines - favor professional websites. Pages laden with misspellings, typos and grammatical errors do not look professional. Yet, many searches are made for common misspellings. How can you take advantage of this?
The best strategy to incorporate typical misspellings into your online marketing campaign is to bid on them in your pay-per-click campaigns. Then, when someone types the wrong word into the search bar, your travel or lodging ad will appear. An added bonus - in most cases, these misspellings are relatively inexpensive to bid on, as well. Compare the cost, for example, for the number one placement in Yahoo Search Marketing for Santa Fe ($1.50 per click) and Santa Fa ($.11 per click). There are not as many searches for the misspelling as for the correct spelling, but who wouldn’t like to get even a few qualified visitors at a small fraction of the cost?

Just thought I would let you all know that we are the Skaneateles people Mary is writing about. For sure, a name like ours is a blessing and a burden. By the way, it means “long beautiful lake” in Iriqouis Indian. See, you learn something new every day.
Point is, Blizzard has done a fabulous job for us. Want to see it? Just type “Skaneateles” in Google or MSN.
Meanwhile, if you are in the area, stop and spend the night with us.
