Gifts from Google’s Press Day

The annual Press Day was held on May10th at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California. Hundreds of journalists attended, video of the event was streamed live over the ‘net and Matt Cutts blogged in real-time from the audience, as did many others. Google gave us all plenty to write about.
As is to be expected, top Googlers talked about crawling, relevance, and spam, and how their search engine is the better than the rest. To view presentation slides, go to Search Engine Watch’s coverage.
The best, and perhaps most anticipated, part of any Google event is unveiling of the company’s newest projects in the web world; this was no exception. Here are the latest things to hatch into beta at Google Labs, where we can all enjoy them:

Use this tool to see trends for highly-searched terms on Google. Up to five phrases may be compared at the same time. You can see which cities, regions and languages get the most searches for a certain term, as well. This is Google’s offering to the world of tagging, book marking and social networking, a la Web 2.O. They have broken down the internet into several broad topics and are offering the opportunity for users to build it out in all directions. If Digg-ing’s your gig, you’ll like this one.
Gadgets are an eclectic array of plug-ins for use with the Google Desktop. They include something for every interest, from blogging statistics and cricket scores, to conference chat and beyond. If you haven’t already done so, download Google Desktop; Gadgets may give you the reason you’ve been looking for.
