The Travel Industry Association of America (or TIA) recently released Summer Travel Gas Price Fact Sheet outlining the effect that gas prices will have on travel across the United States.
To accompany the article, the TIA has compiled a sample list of incentives (in PDF format) that lodging properties across the U.S. are offering to combat the rising cost of fuel.
Travel incentives don’t necessarily include a discount in cost of a hotel room. But by strategically packaging items together, such as a room and a $20 gas card, the travel industry give shoppers the impression that they are getting a “deal”, and make them more likely to book a room.
Examples of the incentives outlined in the sample are:
From the Traverse City, Michigan CVB:
The program, “Pump Up Your Summer,” announced by the Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau will give a $25 Speedway gas card to every visitor who calls to reserve a stay of four nights or longer in any of its 43 participating hotels, motels or resorts between now and Labor Day.
From Emerson Inn by the Sea in Rockport, MA:
When guests book a minimum two night stay Sunday through Thursday stay, they receive a $20 Mobil gas card and an additional $10 gas card for each additional midweek night stay. If guests stay five nights, they receive a full tank of gas ($50 limit). Guests will also receive a lavish continental breakfast each morning.
From the Inn at Ellis River in Jackson, NH:
Visitors will receive a round-trip gas compensation with a minimum two night stay at the inn - available in the fireplace rooms only.
