Can Travelers Trust Review Sites?

Review sites like TripAdvisor and IgoUgo offer travel information submitted by and for traveleres. They also offer a powerful marketing tool - so powerful, in fact, that some have been manipulating the system. Those offering incentives to guests to submit positive reviews and/or submitting bogus reviews on their own behalf have prompted review sites to begin implementing safeguards to try to keep information “unbiased”.
To learn more about how travel review sites work, and what is being done to ensure their integrity, read this article from the New York Times.

My wife and I run a small lodging company in Upstate New York. We agree, fake reviews can be a problem but the fix is just a click and a phone call away.
Visit the website and look for genuine, authentic content. Browse around and then call the property. Talk to whoever answers, then ask for the manager. Descibe what you are looking for and ask “open ended” questions. Then listen for enthusiasm and truthfulness. Let your common sense be your guide.
