The Blizzard Internet Marketing Shenanigans softball team rebounded from a rocky start to win their first game of the 2006 campaign. For the first time in franchise history, the Shenanigans began the season with an 0-2 record, but timely hitting and well executed defense lead to a 12-7 victory last night over NCC.
To be victorious in this game, the Shenanigans realized they would need to package together base hits, intelligent defense, and sound pitching; they did just that. Now, team manager, Russ Cabe, feels confident that the ship has been righted, and that the team’s chances to reach the playoffs are pretty solid. Though several members from the 2005 squad are no longer able to participate, the new 2006 squad is beginning to gel.
The Shenanigans held a narrow 7-6 lead heading into the final inning of play last night. Timely hits by Anna Kaiser, James Sweeney, Cabe, and Dennis Winchell started the 7th inning the right way. Travis Kaiser, Lisa Sweeney, and Mike Buczek added more base hits, which lead to 5 runs in the top of the 7th. The Shenanigans needed just three outs in the bottom of the 7th inning to close out the contest. Although they surrendered two runs in the bottom of the 7th, the defense remained sound, and the first victory in 2006 was in the books.
A record crowd was in attendance to witness the Shenanigan’s first victory of the season, and Cabe was overheard commenting that the fans served as the 11th man on the field, elevating the entire team to the victory.
