The Shenanigans softball team hit full stride in an exciting victory over NCC #3 in last night’s contest. The contest was certainly the best played game of the season for the Blizzard Shenanigans. The final score was 18-17 in favor of Blizzard Internet, but the box score alone does not tell the full story.
In the early innings of the game, the Shenanigans displayed powerful hitting, great pitching, and solid play at all positions on defense. There were many batters producing base hits, which lead to runs that were much needed to keep up with the equally explosive NCC #3 team of hitters. Ambere, James, Russ, Dennis, Mike, Lisa, and Salomon produced hits that brought RBI and runs for the team before the 4th inning had expired.
In his 3rd at-bat, Dennis crushed a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for a three run home run. In his next at-bat, with two runners aboard, he ripped another three run inside the park home run to right field. At this point, it seemed likely that this would be enough to coast in for the victory. The pendulum moved toward NCC #3 in the last inning however, and the game was tied when the time limit expired.
In the final inning of sudden death overtime, the Shenanigans kept NCC off the board, and took their turn at the plate. With two outs and a runner on 2nd base, Russ Cabe stepped up and delivered the game winning hit to center field. In doing so, the Shenanigans edged NCC #3 by a final score of 18-17.
After the game, the locker room interviews echoed the same thoughts. Everyone on the team was pleased that they produced their most complete effort of the season, and it was easily the most fun any of the players have had while playing this season. Each person was able to contribute, like Salomon Liston who allowed nothing to get past him while controlling the outfield defense from center field. Russ Cabe was ready to deliver MVP honors to Dennis Winchell for delivering two home runs in the game. Winchell later deferred the accolades back to Cabe because he hit the game winning single to center field with two outs. “I was happy to knock some runners in tonight, but when we really needed the most important run of the night, Russ stepped up in a tough situation and came through for us” said Winchell. Ambere Cunningham was thrilled with the way the team played, and she summed it up best when she said, “this was the best game we played. It is so fun to win like that, and everyone is talking about it today. It is clear that this effort lifted the spirit of everyone who participated, and the Shenanigans would seem fit to work overtime without pay at any point in the future.
