Better Third than First?

In PPCs, first isn’t always the best. The number one and two spots can sometimes get a lot of traffic without returning a lot of revenue. A true shopper will check out several different sites on the page before booking or contacting. When your site comes up a little further down the page, like in the second or third position, click-throughs will usually deliver a better percentage of bookings and/or requests for more information.

I am a big believer in the third spot. The first spot has a lot of ego value… but, the bigger factor may not be your #1 ranking, but, but your actual title and description in the results. I believe that in the future we will be focusing more on how appealing we look when we do come up in the Search Engines, and less on actual ranking.
This trend can be studied in Google Adword accounts, which measure and reward good ad-copy. The data available in these accounts make a convincing argument to focus more on sounding appealing when you do come up and less on focusing where you rank.
