Increase Web Site Traffic and Link Popularity Simultaneously

Increasing Web Site Traffic and Link Popularity Simultaneously
Brian Ramsey, Blizzard Internet Marketing, Inc

As most of you are aware, there is no magic formula for increasing search engine ranking.  There are, however, a couple of steps that will help to improve rankings and traffic.  Over the last several months, we’ve discussed the importance of link popularity and its positive correlation to your web site’s performance in search engines.  In addition to incorporating link building strategies, another effective yet somewhat overlooked approach is to increase the size of your web site in the form of new pages with relevant content.

If you do a search for any topic in Google, you will find the web sites that come up in the Top 10 all have a lot of content on their web site.  For your web site to increase in popularity, you have to constantly add more (and “fresh”) content.  Increasing evidence suggests that search engines favor “fresh” web sites with relevant content.  By relevant content, I mean information that promotes your business and area, rather than content that is obscure.  This will increase your ranking for the keywords on your site and ultimately increase new and repeat site traffic.  Creating the pages and adding them to the site, however, is just the first step.

Beware of People Selling Keywords

Beware of People Selling Keywords
Russ Cabe, Blizzard Internet Marketing, Inc.

We have issued this warning before, but there seem to be many companies making a push to sign people up to buy keywords that supposedly will make an advertisement show up whenever people search the purchased keywords.  Here are two typical sales pitches these companies are using:

“Would you like to put your website at the top of search results for all the major search engines?”

“Would you like to reach internet consumers the moment that they search your business category on the major search engines?”

Web Site Savvy – Exit Links

Web Site Savvy – Inside Blizzard Tracker — Exit Links – Where Do Visitors Go?
Christine Burke, Blizzard Internet Marketing, Inc

Do you ever wonder where your web site visitors go after they leave your site?  For visitors exiting via a link on one of your pages, you can get good statistics from Blizzard Tracker Professional Edition or ROI Edition.

Sending traffic away via an exit link can be a good thing or a bad thing.  On certain important pages, you might not want to “leak” traffic or link popularity to an external site.  For example, it may be better to have your own “local attractions” page(s) rather than sending visitors to your local Chamber of Commerce site.  In most cases, however, links are placed intentionally for people to use.  Perhaps your site is a directory and companies pay to be listed there.  In this case, you can use the Exit Links reports to learn how many visitors you are sending to each site.  This will help you to justify the fees that you’re charging for a listing.

Question from: Jim Belote, Beall Mansion
Is there an inexpensive program that would allow us to sell Gift Certificates online?

Answer: The best deals on gift-certificates are coming from booking engines like www.availabilityonline.com and www.rezovation.com, as well as many others.  We don’t know of any other services that offer inexpensive certificate programs per se.  Hosting companies typically charge extra each month for secure servers and shopping cart services, but these allow for certificates to be "integrated" into your website.

What do we think about Flash and Virtual Tours?

Trent Blizzard, Blizzard Internet Marketing, Inc.

There are two questions we hear frequently that we’d like to address:
What do you think about Flash?
What do you think about Virtual Tours?

What do you think about Flash?
Flash is an increasingly common web-development language; it allows a webmaster to create a website that is interactive and visually appealing.  Innkeepers often ask us if Flash loads quickly enough, if enough visitors can see it, and if it works well.  We have seen many Flash websites that load quickly for the average user.  When done properly, these sites do not appear to be any slower than standard ones.  The vast majority of web users (over 95%) are indeed able to view them.

Often, Flash is used as an element in a standard HTML website.  The Flash component is generally in a photo slideshow or the navigation, though there are a lot of other applications for it as well.  See Spa at Harbour Inn – St. Michaels, MD for an example of a Flash slideshow.  Using Flash as a component on your website offers the following advantages:
